3YO TS savings calculator for laser cutting tables

In laser cutting, dross welds itself to the table slats. The slats need regular cleaning, and once they can no longer be cleaned they are replaced; small parts get caught in them and stop the machine. 3YO TS is sprayed onto the table with the 3YO GUN applicator and, on contact with heat, forms a film that keeps dross from sticking to the slats.

The calculator sets what 3YO TS costs per year against what you save on steel, cleaning, and stops, using your own shop’s numbers. It uses the formulas and values stated by the manufacturer, 3YO Technology, taken from their official calculator. The result is an estimate; the prudent scenario shows what remains if the real effect is smaller than stated.

How it is calculated

Slats. The weight of one set is estimated from the table area and slat thickness, at 25.93 kg per m² per mm of thickness. 3YO states that slats last 3.5 times longer. The sets you no longer need to cut are multiplied by their weight and the sheet price, minus the scrap you no longer sell.

Cleaning. Slats are cleaned 3 times less often, each cleaning takes 2.5 times less time, and the area beneath the table is cleaned 4 times less often. The hours saved are multiplied by the operator hour cost.

Stops. Hours lost each month to caught parts and build-up drop by 70%. With a single table, the machine also stands still while it is cleaned or the product is applied, so those hours count as machine hours and not as operator hours too; otherwise the same hour would be counted twice.

3YO TS cost. The number of applications per year is the larger of operating hours divided by 325 and weeks worked divided by 4, plus one application per new slat set. Consumption is the dose for the table size times applications times the number of tables. 5 operator minutes per application are added to the cost.

Prudent scenario. Each reduction keeps only 75% of the stated effect. For example, slats no longer last 3.5 times longer but 2.15 times. It is the same “expected” scenario the 3YO calculator offers.

What the calculation leaves out

Cut quality. Quality improvements and fewer non-conformities are not counted in money. The 3YO calculator leaves them out too.
Safety. Slat cleaning is manual work next to the machine, with sharp slats and hot dross. Fewer cleanings mean fewer chances of injury, but the calculator does not turn that into money.
The applicator. 3YO TS is applied exclusively with the 3YO GUN, a one-off purchase that is not part of the yearly cost.
Making new slats. Machine and labor time to cut and fit a new set is not included, so the slat saving is, if anything, understated.
Other table sizes. The calculator uses only the doses 3YO publishes. For a table of another size, the exact dose is set when quoting.
